The capoeira group Senzala Scotland needed a striking t-shirt design for their upcoming grading event in Edinburgh. As the t-shirt was intended to be not only a momento of the event, but also a promotional item, The design had to appeal to two distinct target audiences. Through the use of acutely specific cultural references, to the intended wearer of the t-shirt, and the use of broader references to appeal to the viewer, who knows less about the subject matter.
This design uses the simple, iconic shape of the berimbau (a musical instrument predominant in capoeira) overlaid on a strong blue background to reference the Scottish flag. The typography and paint effects refer to the rough-and-ready nature of the martial art, while the strong circular elements refer to the roda, the circle in which the game is played.
This design was produce collaboratively with Galatea Mancini.
